Russia launched it's first new Angara rocket on a suborbital test flight on July 9th at 4 PM, local time, from Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northwestern Russia.
The Angara rockets are the first to be designed and built in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union, with all of its components being built in Russia.
The Angara rocket family will be able to launch different types of payloads ranging in weight from about 4,000 kg to more than 24,000 kg into a variety of orbits, including into geostationary orbit. The rocket family will include small, medium-weight and also heavy-lift rockets.
The Angara rockets purpose is to reduce Russia's dependence on the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kasahkstan, which Russia is renting, the Angara rockets would secure Russia's independent access to space.
