Today (5th January 2014), ISRO successfully launches its 8th Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D5) from Satish Dawan Space centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, India. The GSLV-D5 was powered by an indigenous cryogenic engine. It took 20 years for ISRO engineers to develop this Cryogenic Engine, which was denied by U.S.
The launch vehicle carried 1,982 KG of GSAT-14 communication satellite. The satellite was placed in perfect orbit after 17 minutes of flight.
"I am proud to say that ISRO has done it…," ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan announced at the end of the successful mission. "This is a big day for space technology in the country. This is a big achievement for the GSLV programme."
